Risotto is one of my favourite things to make. Not only is it delicious and relatively foolproof, but it’s also improbably impressive. Announce to a group of friends that you’re making risotto for dinner and someone is bound to gaze at you in wide-eyed incredulity, regarding this as some kind of domestic tour de force. Read more…

Perhaps this title is a bit redundant. After all, vegetables are hardly ever sinful, even at worst of times. But I’m in the mood for some health-inducing leafy greens today, so it seemed appropriate. Yesterday was my 26th birthday, and an evening at Jamie Oliver‘s Fifteen restaurant, enjoying the five-course tasting menu, left me feeling like I never wanted to eat again. Read more…

I’m the kind of person who can eat anything for breakfast. While I love sweet treats like sticky buns, home-baked scones or granola, I’m just as inclined to reach for something savoury of a morning. I know people for whom this would be impossible; anything remotely salty passing their lips before noon results in stomach aches and dramatics. Oh well, more for the rest of us. Read more…

We all have our favourite flavours, right? The ones that keep tempting us, year after year, and become mainstays in our home cooking. Also the ones that as food bloggers we have to watch ourselves on, lest we become known as “the girl who writes that goat’s cheese blog“. Read more…

Posting on my blogs has been a bit thin lately, due in part to a temperamental internet connection at the end of the week, and in part to a spontaneous day trip to the country yesterday. I was happy to get back to routine today, and head to the market to get some food for the week ahead. Read more…

When I was growing up, I had a lot of dolls. And I do mean a lot. Though many were inherited from my sister, I received my fair share (some might say more than) of new ones for birthdays and Christmases. Baby dolls, porcelain dolls, rag dolls; it just seemed that they were drawn to me, like moths to a flame. Read more…

In my family, we don’t really do lunch on the weekends. Maybe I should rephrase that: we eat, but we don’t do large, elaborate lunches. While some families might sit down to pastas, gratins, breads and salads at midday, mine tends to favour nothing more taxing than a grilled sandwich, and more likely a mug of soup. Read more…

Well, it’s official. There have been whisperings about it for weeks now, but I can now confirm: Autumn has arrived! Despite the still-sunny days and mainly-green trees, there’s a crispness in the London air which marks the start of my favourite season. I especially noticed the change at the market today, which was full of shoppers looking for the first of Autumn’s bounty. Read more…

“Pesto Purée” is a bit redundant, no? Obviously a pesto is going to be puréed, and oftentimes (in my kitchen at least) a purée is a pesto. It’s just that I’m never certain what to call this; it started as a puréed pasta sauce and gradually morphed into a pesto, so I now use both terms. Read more…

Every Christmas morning, my mum or sister will bake blueberry muffins. A strange choice for the time of year perhaps, but they’re made with frozen berries that Mum buys, freezes and hordes during the warmer months. For me, the origin of the berries is a moot point; my disinclination for cooked fruit means that I get two muffins made especially for me- before the offending berries are added. Oh, how I love my blueberry-less blueberry muffins. Read more…
