Fruit and veg and cheese (oh my!)

veg

Nope, it’s not just veg this week; I bought a great variety of stuff today. This always happens when Andrew accompanies me to the market- with two people to please, we end up choosing a more interesting selection than I might by myself.

I love it when the apples start to arrive at the market. These early Discovery apples are tart and delicious, and I’ll love snacking on them throughout the week. The round of goat’s cheese and the broccoli are for another Spicy Broccoli Salad; I’ve got some sunblush tomatoes in the fridge that will be perfect for it.

The pot of chives is going to be nice to have around, and I’m sure I’ll put the leeks to good use, too. Braised with white wine, they make a lovely sauce for pasta. I don’t have any real plans for the potatoes, or cabbage, but I’ll find something.

You might have noticed that the strawberries are back. They were absent from the market for the last few weeks (I think I ate them all), but now they’re back in full force. I’ve got an idea for how to use these, based on a dessert I had a few weeks ago at the Books for Cooks test kitchen in Notting Hill; a tender cake of buttermilk, semolina and lemon zest, topped with crème patisserie and loads of fresh berries.

What’s cooking with you this week?

I had intended to cook chocolate-crusted lemon tart last night… and had bought these fantastic looking lemons for it… The recipe specified to use a springform pan so I made up my pastry, popped it in the oven to bake blind… make up the lemon filling with double cream, lemons and eggs, poured it into the tart case in the pan… and the pan started to leak. :-(

Oh well… you win some, you lose some. Next time, I use a proper tart dish.

I’m thinking lots of stir-frys this week.

Dawn, I have SO done that! I think for me it was a quiche that leaked- I was also using a springform cake pan because I didn’t have a tart tin at the time. I was angry with my pastry- those pesky little cracks!
