New Term Veg

It’s not only a new term for me at school (starting tomorrow) but a new season in London. Honestly, the past couple days have convinced me that we’ve skipped right over Spring and gone straight into Summer. Of course, as my Mum said to me earlier today, it might be back to Spring or even Winter in a couple days, so I’m enjoying it while I can.

Part of that was getting up bright and early and heading to the market. I’m still waiting on asparagus and strawberries, but the radishes are finally here, and the spring greens are abundant. I’ll probably eat the radishes and fennel bulb together, maybe in a spring salad like this one. I also got a lovely head of cauliflower, which I’ll probably braise into submission for a dinner later this week.

I’m also hoping to get some baking done this week, though I’m not sure I’ll have the time with work and school starting again. My sister’s oatmeal cookies look simple enough though, and all those oats should be just the hit of energy I need in the coming days.

    Oh this all looks fabulous. I’m up north in Yorkshire but we too have had soaring temperatures usually only expected in summer.

    I think salads of one kind or another will be on our menu this week – you just can’t fight the sunshine!

    I always like seeing your photos of your “haul” in my RSS feed – it always looks so fresh and green. Do you use any specific setup (camera, lens, lighting etc)? I always find food photography really hard – although it doesn’t help that my kitchen and living room have pretty bad natural light. Harsh sun at mid-day and then the sun disappears around the corner of the building.

    Tonight it’s grilled baby leeks from the farmers market. So jealous of your beautiful radishes- none here yet in Colorado.

  5. We made spicy Italian sausage with fresh kale and tomatoes on a blue corn polenta last night. It was yummy!

    Good luck in your new term! On my menu this week is a farro risotto with fava beans and asparagus, pear and Gorgonzola flatbread and tilapia with mango sauce! will be blogging about all of them soon.

  8. It truly is an exciting time of the year, when we northerners start getting all kinds of new fresh local veggies! It puts a “spring” in my step.
