Yesterday was the first farmer’s market of the new year, and I headed out early in the morning to make the most of it. Unfortunately, many of the actual farmers didn’t- vendor turnout was sparse. Apparently, I’m not the only one reluctant to return to everyday life after the holiday! I did manage to find some food though, and these are my cooking plans for the week ahead.
A lot of what you see above- the parsnips, carrots, sprouts and thyme- are for a multi-veg dish that I’m keeping under wraps for now. Destined for another guest post at The Beat That My Heart Skipped, this is a delicious and hearty winter favourite.
Cauliflower isn’t a huge favourite around here (unless of course it’s smothered in cheese!) but I’m aiming to change that. I’d like to try this one roasted, with chopped nuts and buttered breadcrumbs, as in a recipe from one of my Christmas cookbooks. Otherwise, I might attempt a simple gratin or a spicy stew.
The sprout tops I bought just because I thought they were pretty- like giant green peonies. Goodness knows what I’ll make with them, though. Most recipes I see for them seem to be of the simple stir-fry variety, but I’m after something more exciting. Any ideas?
What about you- for this first week of “regular” life in 2010, what are you cooking?
