Indulgence: Shrimp, Red Pepper and Cheddar Quesadillas

quesadillas

I love shrimp, and Andrew and I used to eat them frequently. Lately I’ve been trying to scale us way back, due to certain ethical concerns, as well as the somewhat alarming news that seafood will be off the menu completely within 50 years. So these days we might have one or two meals with shrimp a month, which is pretty much it for our animal intake. Read more…

Formula for lunch: Legume salad

bean salad

As might be becoming clear by now, I love a (non-green) salad. Quick to make, versatile and infinitely portable, legume salads are among my favourite. The butter bean version pictured here was yesterday’s lunch, made from leftover cooked beans and gussied up with herbs and cheese. While putting it together, I realized that my salads tend to follow a very specific formula, one that allows for infinite variations on the theme. Read more…

A Med meal: Roasted Tomatoes with Shrimp, Chili and Feta

tomatoes prawns feta

I think I’m in a Mediterranean state of mind, today. Is there such thing as a Mediterranean state of mind? I’m sure there must be. Waking up with the sun in my eyes was probably what did it, and I haven’t been able to shake that “holiday” feeling all day. Read more…

farro salad

Wow, two farro recipes in as many days. Not very adventurous of me, I’ll admit. Typical, though; I tend to get into “moods ruts” in my cooking, becoming obsessed with a particular ingredient and eating it for days on end until my interest wanes. Read more…

mac and cheese

As I mentioned on Sunday, macaroni and cheese has got to be one of my favourite dishes of all time. Sure, I’ve graduated from the Kraft Dinner I loved as a kid (and, um, university student), and these days I’m more likely to experiment with making my own. But really, I’ll take it any way: stovetop, baked, from a package, homemade. I’ve never met a macaroni and cheese that I didn’t like, and I’ve met a lot. Read more…

How to mess with a good thing: Cauliflower and Pasta Gratin

cauliflower pasta gratin

Usually when people begin to mess around with perfectly good recipes, it’s with the admirable aim of improving them: making them quicker to prepare, healthier, or just plain tastier. Not me, though. I confess to sometimes messing for far stupider reasons- laziness, boredom, the fun of messing. Read more…

Recipe Hack: Warm Broccoli Salad with Onions, Chestnuts and Blue Cheese

warm broccoli salad

It’s a beautiful Bank Holiday Monday here in London. I’ve been celebrating by sitting on the couch, drinking tea and reading magazines. Yes, perhaps the day would better have been spent outside in the sunshine, but we did have the window open, and besides- we had to walk outside to get the magazines. Read more…
