Favourite Colours: Purple & Green Couscous Salad

“What’s your favourite colour?” is one of those questions which, along with classics like “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, adults don’t get asked much. Which is a shame, because I’m pretty sure that most adults would have a more interesting answer than your average six-year-old. While once upon a time I would have said “pink” simply because that’s what every little girl is expected to say, today my answer would be far more considered. Read more…

Battle of the Biscuits: Mint Chocolate Cookies with Optional Ganache

In a week’s time, I’ll be flying home to Canada to attend the wedding of a very dear friend. I’ve known Margaux since we were 14 years old, and not only is she talented, sweet and beautiful, but she’s extremely organized, and I’ve no doubts that she’ll throw a damned good party. For obvious reasons, I’m incredibly excited about this trip- I get to see my friends from high school, watch one of them get hitched, hang out with my parents and generally soak up the hometown love. Usually these trips home offer me  a brief respite from cooking, but not this one. At least, not entirely. Read more…

Cute with Fruit: Strawberry Cupcakes with Mascarpone Frosting

Strawberry Cupcakes with Mascarpone Frosting

I’m not terribly fond of cute things. Babies, puppies and Emperor penguins notwithstanding, I tend to prefer modern, rustic or retro aesthetics over twee and girly. The same goes for the food I make, which is why this is the first time in my year-plus of blogging that I’m posting a cupcake recipe. Read more…

Luxury on bread: Shaved Asparagus Tartine

Shaved Asparagus Tartine

I crave a simple and beautiful lunch. Something light but satisfying, taking just minutes to prepare but good for savouring over the next twenty or so. Working from home at times (and at a job mere steps from my front door the rest of the time), this is a luxury that I can afford. And I must say, enjoying it helps makes up for those I can’t. The Mother of Invention: Muffin-cup Frittatas with Pasta, Feta and Mint

Muffin-cup frittatas with pasta, feta and mint

They do say that necessity is the mother of invention, and though I can’t quite claim to have invented muffin-cup frittatas (it seems that, oh, 90,000-odd people thought of it first), I’d say the phrase definitely rings true here. Read more…

A summery spread: Broad Bean, Mint and Lemon Peasto

peasto

Before I dash out to the farmer’s market this morning, I wanted to share one last recipe that I made this week. Remember those broad beans from last Sunday? I was going to make a Jamie Oliver recipe with them, one that I’ve been eyeing for a while. In the end, of course, I couldn’t help but alter the proportions of the recipe a touch, both because of a lack of the right ingredients on hand, and my own insolence. Read more…

A fancy lunch: Asparagus with a Poached Egg and Vanilla-Mint Vinaigrette

asparagus with poached egg

This isn’t the kind of thing that I usually have for lunch, believe me. The above meal is akin to what I call “fancy” food, ie. food that, while delicious, is best left to French bistros and particularly ambitious food bloggers, rather than attempted by yourself, at home. Read more…
