What’s wrong with me: Tasty Tofu Scramble

If you’re a reader of The Kitchn, you’ll know that the past week has been vegan-themed over there. There have been new recipes, thought-provoking discussions and round-ups from their vast archives. For my part, I’ve long maintained that I could never go vegan; I was born with a rare condition that would make this impossible for me. Namely, my insides are 15% cheese, and if I don’t maintain that ratio, I will die. Read more…

Seasonal snapshot: Green Summertime Quiche

I have been dreaming about this quiche for a long time. So long that it was originally titled the Green Springtime Quiche, back when my mind first conceived of it in May. I daydreamed of a creamy filling packed full of green goodness, held together by a flaky butter pastry. Quiche is hardly a throw-together meal at the best of times, but I think you’ll agree that three months is a long time to wait, even for quiche. Read more…

No need to forage: Green Pea Pancakes

Green Pea Pancakes

I just love fresh peas. Not only are they delicious – crisp and juicy, tasting of pure summer – but they’re fun, too. Unlike their difficult Springtime sister the broad bean, peas require very little in the prep department. There’s no tearing at leathery skins and coaxing beans from their furry beds, before boiling and skinning them individually, Thank God. With peas it’s simply a matter of “zipping” open the pods and pushing out the perfect green jewels within. As monotonous kitchen chores go, pea-podding is pretty great. Read more…

A summery plaster pasta: Pasta with Peas, Ricotta and Lemon

pasta with peas, ricotta and lemon

I should probably explain, huh? This dish unfortunately goes by the moniker “Plaster Pasta” in my house. Charmingly bestowed by Andrew, it’s from the early days of the recipe, when I was still working out the kinks. As it cooled, the ricotta would firm up and the whole thing would stick together in a rather unappetizing way. Unappetizing for him, I should say. I didn’t really mind- it still tasted good! If plaster pasta sounds less than appealing to you, though, not to worry. I fixed the recipe and it doesn’t do that anymore. Unfortunately, the name has stuck. Read more…

More memories: (Not) Trenette al Pesto

trenette one

I’ve been on somewhat of a pesto kick lately. What with my recipe for Stromboli and my Broad Bean Peasto, it’s definitely been appearing in my kitchen more since summer began. I even have a rocket pesto in the fridge right now, which I made earlier today for tonight’s dinner. That fresh herb flavour just seems to go with everything right about now, doesn’t it? A summery spread: Broad Bean, Mint and Lemon Peasto

Before I dash out to the farmer’s market this morning, I wanted to share one last recipe that I made this week. Remember those broad beans from last Sunday? I was going to make a Jamie Oliver recipe with them, one that I’ve been eyeing for a while. In the end, of course, I couldn’t help but alter the proportions of the recipe a touch, both because of a lack of the right ingredients on hand, and my own insolence. Read more…
