The dawn of April brings not only a new month, but a new year of blogging for me. I started writing here toward the end of March 2009, and accidentally missed my one-year “blogiversary” last week. I’ve got some big ideas and plans for the next 12 months of the Kitchenist Network, but until then, here’s what went on in March.

Kitchenist‘s recipes in March centered on comfort food: braised and roasted veg, traditional baked goods and even pizza. I kicked off the month with a post on Nutty, Spicy Pangrattato, which inspired one of my favourite bloggers to try it, too. I returned the favour by getting some inspiration from her site, leading to a fresh take on an old classic: Polenta Pizza.

I think my favourite recipes on the month were the indulgent, luxurious ones. Coconut-Braised Sprouts with Cannellini Beans was warming on a cold day, and Long-Cooked Broccoli with Buttermilk will undoubtedly become a house favourite around here.

In terms of sweets, it was all about chocolate cookies last month. I started with a recipe for Brown Sugar Biscuits with Toffee, Chocolate and Sea Salt, and followed up a few weeks later with some Triple Threat Chocolate Cookies.

Kitchenisms trudged right along in March, and I’m pretty happy with some of the things I shared there. Featured Etsy shops included three of a fellow blogger, and one of a talented potter. My favourite though was trampoline, if not for the fab retro goodies then for the stunning product photography.

Obviously, I dealt with non-Etsy wares, too. I asked whether you preferred white or coloured tableware, and shared the items I liked from the new Liberty of London for Target collection. I also rounded up the best-looking refrigerators around, and reviewed one of my favourite magazines.

Of the kitchens I featured, two especially stole my heart: a modern and luxurious Swedish space and the set of Sophie Dahl’s new cooking show. One is sophisticated and one rustic, but it’s tricky to say which I love more.

Kitchlit was completely ignored last month, but it’s a situation that should be rectified soon. I’ve just received a truckload (okay, a couple) of cookbooks via Amazon, and I’m looking forward to reviewing again soon.

February was month which brought both good and bad for the Kitchenist Network. I’ve been taking a blogging course (don’t laugh, it’s been awesome) which has provided me with ideas and inspiration for my blogs. Ironically, it’s also been taking my time away from blogging. Throw a new job into the equation, and posting overall has been light. Still, there was some posting going on, so here’s what I got up to in February.

Despite the infrequent posting, February was as tasty as any other month here at Kitchenist. I’ve been keeping up with my resolution to bake more bread, first thinking up a new kind of Banana Bread, and then getting quick and dirty with Nigella’s Lazy Loaf.

I’ve also been finding recipe inspiration in my new workplace. The caterer/traiteur where I work churns out some delicious dishes, and my Beet, J-Choke and Clementine Salad and Celeriac and Apple Soup were both born of ideas I got there.

I like to challenge myself and try new things when I can, so this month I did twice. I made my first-ever strata, a delicious number filled with red onion, kale and cheese. Even more adventurous (for me), I whipped up a batch of the most delicious ketchup ever and canned it.

Though not as many as in some months, I’m really pleased with some of my posts on Kitchenisms in February. In terms of featured spaces, I found the good stuff: a breathtaking Swiss Kitchen, the kitchen of a well-known blogger, and an arty and eclectic space from Marie Claire Maison.

I also did a couple of larger design round-ups, which I was quite pleased with. Ten Cool Kitchen Storage Ideas was an assignment for my blogging class, and Ways with Wood was my personal ode to a favourite material.

In terms of products, I had some favourites. The stunning work of UK ceramacist Virgina Graham took my breath away. I was equally chuffed to stumble across the Etsy shop Ninainvorm; Nina’s whimsical plates and teapots are perfectly covetable.

My review blog Kitchlit got a little love in February. I reviewed the UK-published The Thrifty Cookbook by Kate Colquhoun, a handy little book dedicated to reducing waste and saving money by making you a better cook. I gave it three stars, but think that for beginner cooks, it would be worth even more.

One down, eleven to go. The first month of the year is over and done, and it certainly brought its share of challenges for me. I’m looking forward to happier and more productive months to come, but in the meantime- here’s what went down on the Kitchenist Network in January.

Despite a hiatus in the middle of the month, Kitchenist still saw some great recipes over the past four weeks. I started the year with a promise to myself: to bake more bread in 2010. My first foray was with Spotted Dog, a currant-studded Irish soda bread. I followed it up with a recipe for Spicy Cauliflower and Chickpea Stew, my most popular post of the month.

The middle of the month brought sad news: my 97-year-old Granny passed away, necessitating a trip home to Canada and a break from blogging. When I returned, I wrote a tribute to her alongside a recipe for Lentil Gratin. If you haven’t tried this yet, I urge you to give it a go- not a looker, but delicious nonetheless.

Sweets for the month included some Red Hot Gingernut cookies and some Mini Almond, Lemon and Semolina cakes. But to my surprise, a recent post on Leek Rarebit is attracting even more oohs and aahs- who knew so many people loved melted cheese on bread?

There were few “isms” on Kitchenisms in January, as my daily posting schedule over there is the first to suffer when things come up in my personal life. Still, I managed to feature some lovely Etsy finds, including Ten for 2010 at the beginning of the year, and two shops by the same artist later on.

I also shared two charming but different Cool Kitchens: a light and feminine space at the beginning of the month, and a bright and cheerful room when I returned home again.

January saw me at least make a start on reviewing my Christmas cookbooks at Kitchlit, though I didn’t get too much further than that. Rachel Allen’s Home Cooking was the lucky one who got in first, and I think anyone who has this tome is lucky, too. A four-star book full of delicious, easy-to-follow recipes.

Today brings not only a new month, but a new year! While many of my favourite bloggers are posting 2009 round-ups around now, I think I’ll stick with my old monthly post for continuity’s sake.

It’ll be a short and sweet one, anyway: I didn’t get much blogging done in December. The last month of the year brings so much festivity, stress and general hustle and bustle that anything else- blogging, exercise, sanity- can easily fall by the wayside. I did manage to post a little bit over the past four weeks, so let’s see what went down on my blogs.

Kitchenist was the most active of my blogs in December; no matter how busy you are, you’ve still got to eat!

I often fall back on soup in cold weather, and December was book-ended by them: Pistou Soup to kick the month off and a creamy Brussels sprout one just yesterday. In between was a variety of other foods in the “comfort” category, including a Squash and Kale Tart and some fascinating Root Vegetable Bread Dumplings.

I managed to find time for sweets, too (don’t I always?), sharing a variation on my favourite brownie recipe. Toward the end of the month I indulged in some festive baking with my sister, making our traditional Christmas Stollen. I contributed the Candied Peel (the secret ingredient, if I do say so myself).

I ignored Kitchenisms a bit toward the end of the month, but it started off well. My first annual Holiday Gift Guide kicked off the month, and I had a great time rounding up the best of Art, Vintage, Practical gifts, Handmade items and Edibles.

Poor Kitchlit didn’t see any action at all in December. Not to worry though; with four new cookbooks as Christmas gifts and some others lined up in wait, it’s sure to pick back up again in 2010.

December has finally arrived, and brings with it short, dark days, comfort foods, holiday baking and of course- Christmas! But before I delve into all that, let’s take some time to look back at the last month. Here’s what went on at Kitchenist and beyond in the month of November.

Kitchenist saw some delicious recipes over the course of the month, both old favourites and new experiments.

I began with a trusty fallback of mine, Meaty But Not Really Pasta Sauce. This hearty lentil-packed dish that can be served over just about anything. I also let you know about my guest post at The Beat That My Heart Skipped, where I shared my recipe for Slow-Baked Beans with Maple Syrup. Just recently, I wrote about a favourite stir-fry of mine, Peanut Thai Noodle.

November saw me trying some new ideas on for size, too. I was inspired by Sara to make Roasted and Spiced Chickpeas and Sweet Potatoes, and tackled an Indian korma for the first time, with the help of Nigel Slater.

I didn’t abandon the baking last month, either. I posted some red, white and green Holiday Oatmeal Cookies and shared a wintertime Pumpkin Scone recipe. But the most delicious treat I made was No-Butter Apricot and Almond Cake, which defied its healthy ingredients by being moist, flavourful and downright addictive.

Kitchenisms continued to see some good postin’ action in November. On the Etsy front, I rounded up some great vintage products, including Dansk and Fiestaware. I also liked the pottery of Prince Design UK, which sells lovely handmade porcelain.

As for kitchens, I featured some nice spaces, both individually and in series. A favourite was this Mustard Modern kitchen in San Francisco, but I also bit the bullet and featured my own Kitchenist Kitchen. In decor series I enjoyed rounding up Reclaimed Style and the Blackboard trend.

In the realm of photography I found some lovely and inspiring series, including the Autumn catalogue of Toast and a Flickr ode to apple picking. My favourite by far was the work of Sharyn Cairns, whose beautiful food styling is a treat to behold.

I’m currently in the midst of my Kitchenisms Holiday Gift Guide 2009, a week-long extravaganza of cool present ideas for the holiday season. It kicked off yesterday with Art, continued today with Vintage, and will be going all week. Check it out!

I posted two cookbook reviews on Kitchlit in November. Kicking off the month was Red Velvet & Chocolate Heartache, the “healthy cakes” book full of veggie-based recipes and irritating writing. Since the recipes themselves were generally delicious (see No-Butter Apricot and Almond Cake, above) I gave this book four stars.

Halfway through the month, I reviewed Nigella Christmas to get us all in the festive mood. Not my favourite Nigella Lawson book, but a good effort, and full to bursting with holiday recipes. This one got the three-star treatment.

It’ll be a short one; I took a good chunk of time off from blogging last month, to make way for my holiday back home to Canada. Still, I did manage to squeeze in some blogging in October- here’s what I got up to over the past four weeks.

I posted a grand total of five recipes on Kitchenist in October, but I always think quality trumps quantity- don’t you agree? There was an unintentional focus on breakfast, what with my Apricot-Cinnamon Porridge and Scrambled Eggs with Fresh Corn. I think my Cannellini Bean and Kale Soup probably got the most love, though, and no wonder. The robust fall flavours are perfect for the cooling days, and it’s pretty to look at, too.

When I came home from holiday I continued the focus on fall flavours with a Squash and Chickpea Curry and some Swirly Pumpkin Brownies.

Kitchenisms was also leaner due to my holiday last month, but some great stuff made it on to the blog nonetheless. I kicked off the month by rounding up my favourite salt and pepper shakers on Etsy, and later added the work of illustrator Bridbird to that category.

In terms of product finds, I featured the fun and quirky Fred & Friends, and the trendy wares of Pedlars. I also celebrated the opening of London’s first Anthropologie shop by rounding up my favourite items.

As for lovely kitchens, I stuck to tried-and-true in October. The famous white kitchen from Something’s Gotta Give got some love, as did Ina Garten’s Hamptons barn kitchen. I also posted an ode to every traditionalist’s favourite cooker, the Aga.

There were two cookbooks reviewed on Kitchlit last month, one a four-star success and the other a two-star disappointment. I loved my 26th birthday present Tender, Volume I: A cook and his vegetable patch. By one of my favourite food writers Nigel Slater, this book is chock full of delicious veggie-centric recipes.

In contrast, The Big Sur Bakery Cookbook just wasn’t for me. Many of the recipes contained meat, and those that didn’t just weren’t to my taste. Oh well- you win some, you lose some.

Well, my favourite month of the year has come and gone, and the real Autumn is definitely upon us now. Before I usher in October I want to take the time to look back at the goings-on of the past month. Here’s what I was up to over the past four weeks.

September is a great month for cooking, which I tried to show here on Kitchenist. With the new season’s produce at the market and that crisp feeling in the air, it’s a month for healthy vegetables and indulgent treats. What could be better?

With the market throwing up some of its best work, I found myself indulging in my favourite Fall flavours. Some lovely yellow beets led to this Roasted Beet, Walnut and Goat’s Cheese Salad, and the first butternuts of the year convinced me that a Roasted Squash Pasta might not be such a boring thing, after all. I did get slightly experimental with the new season’s corn; Spicy Corn Fritters were worth waiting 14 years for.

With the days getting cooler, I gradually began to crave heartier, soul-warming food. I’ve started making soup routinely on the weekends, and my Potato and Leek one made an appearance here. Also guaranteed to warm you up are Eggs in a Spicy Chickpea Purgatory, and a rich Broccoli & Cheddar Risotto.

I found a bit of time for baking too, though I didn’t reveal all my efforts on the blog. My Lemonade Scones got some attention though, for one rather unusual ingredient. In the end, the Blueberry Swirl Pound Cake was by far the favourite, as much for its pretty design as for its fruity taste and moist texture.

The Kitchenisms kept coming over the past four weeks, and I feel like I found and featured some great products and spaces.

Etsy had some lovely kitchen-centric offerings in September, including porcelain pottery handmade by wapa, and the watercolour paintings of working woman. Since I’m a sucker for all things vintage, my favourite shop featured was Slow Lane Lost & Found, which had some great retro products.

I did three Flickr series last month, including a bright and cheerful ode to colour, and one that celebrates Autumn’s bounty in the kitchen. The one that stole my heart, though, was Armenian Beauty, gathered from the photostream of mfcorwin. Her photos of daily life in Armenia look like they belong in a food and travel magazine.

Over the last month I rounded up my favourite industrial kitchens, coastal kitchens and breakfast nooks. I even managed to find some galley kitchens that I love, which was no mean feat. In terms of featured spaces, I fell particularly hard for a sunny room in Mexico, and for a pared-down, converted pasta factory.

I reviewed two (quite weighty) books at Kitchlit last month, one a longtime kitchen companion and one a brand-new acquisition. Deborah Madison’s Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone received four stars for its recipe quality and reliability, and I think any vegetarian kitchen would benefit from a copy. Vefa’s Kitchen is a comprehensive and beautifully designed guide to Greek cuisine, recently published by Phaidon. Though not quite my cup of tea, it would be perfect for a Mediterranean food lover.

Happy September! My favourite time of year, this month always makes me think of sharp pencils, new books, piles of crunchy golden leaves and of course, delicious food. September’s arrival means that August is over, so it’s time to see what’s been happening on my blogs over the last month.

Kitchenist has had a great month, full of fresh food, baked goodies and fun times.

London saw some lovely weather earlier in the month, and I took the opportunity to host a picnic to end all picnics. Taking advantage of the warmer temperatures, I also made a green bean salad, a strawberry-laden cake, and tried my hand at my mum’s famous Peach and Blueberry Pie.

I also shared my favourite Granola recipe this month, one that I’ve made time and time again. If granola isn’t your breakfast of choice, how about a scone? My ginger cream ones are pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Recently, the weather’s been turning cooler again, and I compensated with some warming dishes. Russian Cabbage was delicious and rich, but for my money, you should make these Soy Braised Carrots. They’ll be keeping me warm through the autumn, that’s for sure.

Posting at Kitchenisms chugged right along in August, and the new schedule is working out well. I’m still focusing on Etsy, Cool Kitchens, Products, Kitchen Inspiration and Flickr, but there’s enough variety to keep things interesting.

I found some great things on Etsy in August, including the beautiful work of Element Clay Studio at the beginning of the month. Building on that, I featured some of my favourite shops, including the retro findings of Adventures in Vintage, and the illustrated pottery of Esther Coombs.

Other non-Etsy, products got equal treatment in August. I brought you my favourites from Dutch company Royal KVB and Danish one Bodum, and rounded up the best of bento. I think my favourite product find was this lovely ceramic radio, though. With wooden dials and optional floral decals, it’s useable art for your favourite room.

In terms of gorgeous kitchens, August had its fair share. I rounded up loft kitchens and country ones, but I think my dining rooms post was the most fun to do. It’s nice to step out of your box every now and then, and some of the spaces I featured were totally inspiring.

Things were pretty quiet over at Kitchlit for most of the month: one book review was all I managed. Hopefully I’ll be forgiven due to the scale of it; The Silver Spoon is over 1250 pages in length and contains more than 2000 recipes. Considered the most comprehensive Italian cookbook of all time, it’s a must-have for would-be Italians like me.

July has come and gone, and August is upon us. The last month went by like that, but at least I’ve got a lot to show for it. Here’s what’s been happening on my blogs for the past four weeks.

While the focus here at Kitchenist is usually on fresh and local ingredents, the weather definitely plays a part in what I make and write about. Here is London, we’ve had more than our share of days that lean toward grey and dreary. It’s a bit of a shock after the lovely hot June we had (the warmest on record!), but it had its perks.

I’ve been indulging my love of hearty, soul-warming foods usually more appropriate for Autumn. I’ve written about my favourite Spicy Chickpea Curry, tried my hand at a Chickpea and Pasta Soup, and shared a delicious baked pasta dish- Cabbage and Cauliflower Cannelloni.

I’m still experimenting with non-green salads, too. I loved the Spicy Broccoli Salad I made earlier in the month (alas, so did the neighbourhood birds), and just last week I hit flavour combo gold with my Lentil, Onion and Goat’s Cheese Salad.

I haven’t really been focusing on desserts this month, which makes me think I need to step up my sweet game in August! I did, however, make a Strawberry and Mascarpone Tart which was, if I can be so immodest for a minute, to die for. Whether you make one big tart or a selection of mini ones, you must try this!

I scaled back posting at Kitchenisms to once a day in July. This was to make more time for the other things in my life, and I think it worked pretty well. There’s a rough “schedule” of posting now, which looks something like this:

Mondays= Etsy
Tuesdays= a featured Cool Kitchen
Wednesdays= products, designers or on-line shops
Thursday= kitchen design
Friday= Flickr

Favourite Etsy finds this month have included the hand-printed designs of girlscantell and a round-up of vintage canister sets. My favourite Cool Kitchen was a Modern Classic space from Sydney, Australia. In terms of products, I loved searching the Graham & Green site for my favourites.

I’m still having fun with the Colour in the Kitchen series, this month covering Yellow, Black, White and Pink. Surprisingly, Black was the most popular, and I loved the modern, grown-up sensibility of the spaces.

Flickr finds have been abundant, too. I especially liked doing the In the Pantry series, and the White Dishes one.

Kitchlit played host to two book reviews in July: Jamie’s Italy by Jamie Oliver, and The 30-Minute Cook by Nigel Slater.

Both are fantastic cookbooks for what they do, but my prize of the month has got to go to the former. Jamie’s Italy is a whirlwind trip through my favourite cuisine, with some wonderful photos and delicious recipes along the way. I gave it 5 stars, and think that anyone who likes Italian food should give it a go.

My focus at Kitchenist this month has been on fresh, local produce from the market. Feeling a touch nostalgic for last year’s summer holiday to Cinque Terre, I spent a lot of time indulging my love of Italian food. I re-created a recipe for Trenette al Pesto, made Stromboli, and even tackled my own Homemade Orecchiette.

The sweet treats I’ve been baking got a lot of attention, too. Most notably, my Ricotta Tart with Chocolate Crust, Homemade Oreos and Danish Pastries were all crowd-pleasers.

My design blog Kitchenisms grew by leaps and bounds in June. In terms of decor, I’ve been having a lot of fun scouting images of beautiful kitchens. I started a new Colour in the Kitchen series, covering green, purple, red and blue in the past month. Also featured were some great ideas on decorating with plates and giving your fridge a makeover.

Products haven’t gone ignored, either. I’ve rounded up my favourite finds from shops as varied as the V&A, Jme by Jamie Oliver, Garden Trading and RE. Not forgetting independent designers, I loved discovering the work of British designer Kathleen Hills.

Etsy and Flickr continue to be sources of information. From the former I’ve found some great eco products, as well as a newfound love of Milk Glass. From the latter, beautiful images of inspiration that have become series on things like Morning Light and Kitchen Sinks.

I managed three reviews over at Kitchlit in June. I’m beginning to think that aiming for more is too ambitious- I want to make sure I read and use the books thoroughly, after all!

I love the message behind Mark Bittman’s Food Matters, and encourage anyone remotely interested in planet-saving to read it. Having cooked many of the healthy recipes it contains, I can vouch for their deliciousness.

In terms of beautiful photographs and evocative writing, though, the prize of the month goes to Tessa Kiros’s Falling Cloudberries. I recommend this family history of food to anyone who enjoys a good armchair travel.
