My market shop was a quick one this morning, since I had to squeeze it in before a brunch date. My sister, who moved away from London last year, was in back in town last night for a birthday party. She didn’t stay the night with us (for some reason, she felt a friend’s spare bed might be more comfortable than our cold, hard living room floor) but join Andrew and me this morning at a favourite local restaurant. So I was lucky enough to kick off my morning with some sisterly affection and some waffles- so far, so good. Read more…

You know what they like to say about the weather in Britain? “If you don’t like it, wait five minutes.” Both fortunately and unfortunately, this statement rings true; fortunate in that a violent rain shower might blow over in a matter of minutes, and unfortunate in that when you wake up to a gorgeous, sunny sky, it might be gone by the time you’re dressed and ready to enjoy it. Such was the case this morning. It was sunny and clear when I got out of bed, but overcast and preposterously windy by the time I made it to the market an hour later. Still, at least it wasn’t cold, and I can be grateful for small mercies. Read more…

Hello, new year! And hello friends- how have you all been? My winter holidays went a little longer than planned, due to a post-New Year’s trip home to Canada. After some snow-induced changes to my Christmas, I was craving a little family time, so took the past week off in favour of homemade meals, nights out with friends and family parties. Read more…

Notice I said Christmas day, not Christmas Day; we’re not that far ahead on this side of the pond! No, this arrangement is so named because the past two days have been “Christmas days” around here. Meaning that we’ve bought our tree, decorated it, caught a holiday concert and even spent a bit of time wrapping presents. Also, this is likely to be my last veg post of the year; a week tomorrow Andrew and I are off up north for our holidays, so it’s unlikely that I’ll find much need to visit the market next Sunday. Plus, if you squint- that sprout stalk looks a little like a Christmas tree, no? Read more…

Ha! I bet you thought it was going to be another veg-less week around here, didn’t you? No such luck I’m afraid; I’m busy but still here. What with a full day of work on Monday, followed by an incredible evening at the Royal Albert Hall (seeing this show, which was amazing), and a busy day of school and errands yesterday, I just haven’t had a moment to post my Sunday haul yet. I suppose you could say that my mind, as well as my produce, is scattered. Read more…

I was going to call this post “Hallowe’en Veg”, but the time yesterday ran away on me, and here it’s November already. In fact, time in general last week ran away on me, which is why there wasn’t any recipe posting here. My parents have been in the country visiting my sister and me, and I underestimated the time and energy entertaining and sightseeing require. Still I had a good week, and I’m looking forward to another good one ahead (hopefully, a slightly more productive one, as the parents have now decamped to Paris). Read more…

I usually go to the farmer’s market by myself on Sundays, both because I like to go early and beat the crowds, and because I enjoy this solitary bit of my weekend routine. Occasionally though Andrew will decide to come with me, and I like that too. It’s nice to have company when shopping, and for some reason, when we shop together we almost always end up coming home with something a little different in our bag. Read more…

Today was one of those days that remind me why October is my favourite month of all; a bright blue sky, green-and-gold trees, and almost impossibly sunny. The colours seem to have influenced my buying decisions, because why else would I have chosen this particularly vibrant assortment of produce? Read more…

It’s just a regular Sunday around here, but in Canada it’s Thanksgiving weekend. I don’t really have any plans for the occasion, other than a visit to the farmer’s market (check), catching up on Ugly Betty episodes online (check), and doing laundry (working on it). Still, I am thankful for all of those things, except perhaps the laundry. Read more…
