More memories: (Not) Trenette al Pesto

trenette one

I’ve been on somewhat of a pesto kick lately. What with my recipe for Stromboli and my Broad Bean Peasto, it’s definitely been appearing in my kitchen more since summer began. I even have a rocket pesto in the fridge right now, which I made earlier today for tonight’s dinner. That fresh herb flavour just seems to go with everything right about now, doesn’t it? Very Veg Sunday

very veg

Oooh, leafy and colourful! I love it. There was lots of great produce to be found at the farmer’s market today, and I’ve got some yummy dishes planned for the upcoming week. Read more…

A summery spread: Broad Bean, Mint and Lemon Peasto

peasto

Before I dash out to the farmer’s market this morning, I wanted to share one last recipe that I made this week. Remember those broad beans from last Sunday? I was going to make a Jamie Oliver recipe with them, one that I’ve been eyeing for a while. In the end, of course, I couldn’t help but alter the proportions of the recipe a touch, both because of a lack of the right ingredients on hand, and my own insolence. Read more…

A good thing: Stromboli with Pesto and Sundried Tomatoes

stromboli before baking

We eat a lot of pizza around here. I’d say it makes an appearance slightly more often than once a week- maybe once every 6 days? My go-to dough recipe is so quick to put together that it’s become a bit of a fallback. Even if there’s nothing more than a ball of mozarella in the fridge and some passata in the cupboard, we can still manage to rustle up a pretty good pie. Read more…

Blast from the past: Homemade Oreos

oreos with milk

This post is not going to start with a fond childhood memory of eating Oreos accompanied by a tall glass of milk. I didn’t have that kind of childhood; my Mum doesn’t like sweet things much herself, and so endeavored to raise my sister and me to have similar tastes. When we were really young, the health quotient in our house was high. Cookies were always homemade (ginger snaps sweetened with molasses), peanut butter was natural and snacks consisted of a cup of frozen peas. We even drank unsweetened grapefruit juice, for heaven’s sake. Read more…

A fancy lunch: Asparagus with a Poached Egg and Vanilla-Mint Vinaigrette

asparagus with poached egg

This isn’t the kind of thing that I usually have for lunch, believe me. The above meal is akin to what I call “fancy” food, ie. food that, while delicious, is best left to French bistros and particularly ambitious food bloggers, rather than attempted by yourself, at home. Read more…

Sunday Score

sunday score

Well, as you can see, I did much better this week. At the market by 11:30, and there were tonnes of goodies to be found. Coming home after, I could barely contain my excitement over the cooking I’ll be getting up to this week. Read more…

Memories of cheesecake: Ricotta Tart with Chocolate Crust

cheesecake

I don’t think I ever had cheesecake until I was a teenager. At least, I don’t remember having it before then. Growing up, dessert was a rare occurrence. My parents were fond of the classic “Why don’t you have a piece of fruit?” line. Well, a piece of fruit is all fine and well, but what I wanted as I child was dessert, and I hope you’ll forgive me the assertion that eating something after dinner doesn’t make it dessert. Formula for lunch: Legume salad

bean salad

As might be becoming clear by now, I love a (non-green) salad. Quick to make, versatile and infinitely portable, legume salads are among my favourite. The butter bean version pictured here was yesterday’s lunch, made from leftover cooked beans and gussied up with herbs and cheese. While putting it together, I realized that my salads tend to follow a very specific formula, one that allows for infinite variations on the theme. Read more…

A Med meal: Roasted Tomatoes with Shrimp, Chili and Feta

tomatoes prawns feta

I think I’m in a Mediterranean state of mind, today. Is there such thing as a Mediterranean state of mind? I’m sure there must be. Waking up with the sun in my eyes was probably what did it, and I haven’t been able to shake that “holiday” feeling all day. Read more…
